OCR: Although around 30% of the Sahara consists of shifting seas of sand (called ergs), there are also high mountain ranges, principally the Tibesti and Ahaggar mountains reaching to around 9-10,000 feet in height. In many parts of the Sahara there is virtually no vegetation, except in the small number of oases. Further north and south towards the desert's edges, and on the higher mountain slopes more plants are seen. The main inhabitants of the Sahara are the nomadic tribes including the Tuareg (see the 'Peoples' chapter).
